Piguet could not try beyond his grave to emulate Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges’s astronaut-inspired outfits, Futur in order to make sense to a young audience in 1967 needed to borrow from the signs that felt relevant and especially, current, or as Cardin expressed on behalf of humanity,

‘The clothes that I prefer are those I invent for a life that doesn’t exist yet – the world of tomorrow’.

A french designer could make a sense, revolution from both a stylistic and entrepreneurial point of view. He was born in Sant’Andrea di Barbarana but later moved to France where he changed the face of fashion with his daring, experimental approach, and is now considered one of the Greats of The French Academy.

His youth was torn between a love for the theatre and a passion for clothes-making, he gained important experience as cutter for Elsa Schiapparelli and the Dior fashion house before turning to theatre costumes. Then he returned to his first love, Haute Couture and completely revolutionised the entire system: Pierre Cardin was the first designer to introduce unisex fashion, he also reinvented man’s clothing, created the ‘dévertebrée’ jacket and caused a scandal by showing pencil skirts with splits on the catwalk, all in line with his principle of Haute Couture as a fertile source of ideas.

Cardin was also the first person to grasp the importance of the Asian market and the large-scale retail trade consequently signing contracts with Rinascente and a leading chain of German department stores in ‘58, and resulting in his consequent expulsion from the Parisian Chambre Syndicale. Today the Pierre Cardin empire covers a whole range of different activities including catering, in fact he owns the deluxe chain of Chez Maxim’s restaurants. The designer has also inaugurated a museum-monument in Saint Ouen, in the outskirts of Paris, which illustrates his extraordinary creative talent from the ’50’s to the present.
